Evergreen, Ornamental Shrubs for Your Lovely Garden: Mahonia

Mahonia is a genus of attractive, evergreen shrubs with fragrant winter flowers. Popular as ground covers, border plants or hedges, most species of Mahonia do very well as ornamental plants in ground or as pot plants. These evergreen shrubs are originally native to Asia, and Central and North America but are popular houseplants all over the world especially in Europe where it is grown for its winter/autumn flowers and showy fruits.

Flowers of Mahonia usually appear on long stalks and last for a long time. Most species would produce berry-like flowers after flowering period.

Mahonia are frost hardy and do not have any special requirements of soil and water. However, these ornamental shrubs would grow in to perfect ornamental plants when grown with a little care. They are not fussy about growing conditions – just provide moderate water, a sunny spot and a well-drained soil in tropical or sub-tropical climate. These beautiful shrubs can be divided easily by softwood cuttings.

Popular species include:

Mahonia Lomariifolia: Evergreen, winter flowering shrub; grows up to 2 meters and produces deep yellow flowers followed by black berries.

Mahonia Japonica: Tall and wide spreading shrub with scented, lemon flowers. It is quite hardy plant and produced abundance of flowers.

Mahonia Aquifolium: Usually known as Oregon Grape; this lovely plant makes a good ground cover and produces flowers usually in spring. Good choice for landscpaes or rock gardens.

Lovely Bloomer for Cold Climate: Leucojum, Spring Snowflake

Leucojum Vernum or Spring Snowflake, as it is usually known, is a lovely flowering plant ideally suited to cooler and Mediterranean regions. This bulbous plant originally belongs to Europe and Russia and grows very well under trees or near ponds where soil is moist or boggy.

The plant produces clumps of narrow, lily-like leaves of dark green color. Flowers are small and inconspicuous but fragrant. These bell-shaped flowers appear on drooping stems. Each flower has white petals that are tipped with green. Flowers appear in winter or early spring.

Spring Snowflake can be grown in containers, flower beds, borders or as ground covers. It reproduces itself quickly and can be propagated from divisions planted in spring. Though Leucojum would grow in almost any soil, provide it regular watering and feed in a well-drained soil under full or partial sun for best results.

Long Flowering, Tropical Bush: Gaura, the Butterfly Bush

Butterfly bush belongs to the genus of Gaura, which grows natively in most tropical parts of Mexico and the US. These hardy annuals and perennials grow fast and produce long lasting flowers. Ideal for garden borders or as ornamental houseplants, most species of Gaura are tough and accommodating plants. The most common of them is Gaura Lindheimeri or Butterfly Bush. The plant grows as tall, evergreen shrub and produces very delightful flowers of white color with a tinge of pale pink. These beautiful flowers grow on tall stems and stand out in any background.

Phlomis is a genus of hardy bushes and shrubs from the Mint family and is popular border plant for tropical, sub-tropical and the Mediterranean climates. The most popular species of this genus is Phlomis Fruticosa or Jerusalem Sage. It is a tough and quite hardy plant that can be grown in almost all climates except climates with long spells of freeze and frost.

Easily propagated from cuttings, Jerusalem Sage grows up to 1 meter and produces velvety leaves and yellow flowers. Flowers usually bloom in summer or late spring and grow as small, ornamental clusters. Young plants require fertile soil and regular watering however mature plants can grow in a well-drained and alkaline soil without requiring much water.

Though popular as border plant, Jerusalem Sage can be grown as container plant as well.

Lovely, Aromatic Plants for your Herb Garden: Camomile

Anthemis is a genus of annuals and perennials forming dense clumps of flowering feathery and aromatic leaves. Usually grown for summer flowering, Anthemis are nice plants for garden beds, borders or empty spaces in gardens and landscapes.

Popular species include Anthemis Tinctoria which is a busy annual with golden yellow flowers and Anthemis Cupaniana which is a profuse summer bloomer with ‘cushion-forming’ white flowers. It is also known as Camomile and is used in traditional herbal medicine. The plant grows up to 1 meter and forms large clusters. Both flowers and leaves are used in herbal tea for soothing effects. Flowers can also be used in cut flower arrangements.

Most species of Anthemis grow in ordinary but well-drained soil under bright sunlight. These plants propagate from divisions and require moderate watering.
